They Kept Cutting His Farm Gate Until the Old Road Started Counting Every Truck

Chapter 1: The Morning Someone Cut Thomas Carter’s Gate

The bolt cutters were already around Thomas Carter’s chain when he stepped out of the pickup.

He heard the handles close before he reached the gate.

The chain gave with a hard metallic crack.

For a second, nobody moved.

The man holding the cutters looked toward Thomas. Behind him, a white tractor-trailer idled on the county shoulder, its engine shaking the damp morning air. The trailer sat heavy on its axles. Mud marked the tires. Its nose pointed directly toward the narrow gravel lane that crossed Thomas’s pasture and disappeared behind a line of cedar trees.

Thomas shut his pickup door slowly.

“That gate was locked.”

The driver glanced down at the severed chain as though Thomas had pointed out a loose fence staple.
