They Tore Out Virginia’s Farm Pond for Breaking the Rules—Then She Opened the County File They Had Forgotten

Chapter 1: The Excavator Was Already in Her Pond

The excavator bucket was already under the crossing when Virginia Harris reached the gate.

She heard stone grind against steel, then watched the machine lift a slab of limestone that had not moved in nearly twenty years. Muddy water poured from beneath it in a brown sheet.

“Stop!”

Her voice carried across the pasture, but the engine swallowed most of it.

David Lewis, the contractor in the cab, looked toward her and eased off the controls. The bucket hung above the drainage strip with three flat stones balanced inside it.

Eric Martin stood beside the excavator in a clean canvas jacket and work boots that had somehow avoided the mud.

He raised one hand toward David.

“Keep going.”
