They Fined Her Farm Two Hundred Dollars—Then She Found Who Spent $14,000 Watching Her Land

Chapter 1: The Camera Beyond the Kitchen Window

The camera lens appeared beyond Samantha Harris’s kitchen window before she saw the woman holding it.

It floated above the hydrangeas like a dark glass eye, aimed past the sink and into the room.

Samantha froze with one hand around her coffee mug.

Then Betty Wright straightened from the side yard.

She wore a tan field jacket buttoned neatly to the throat despite the warm morning, and a professional-looking camera hung from a strap against her chest. She did not look embarrassed to have been caught. She lifted two fingers in a little greeting, almost cheerful.

Samantha set down the mug.

The farm had been awake for an hour. A delivery truck had already brought seed trays, and beyond the house the small vegetable field shone with irrigation water. The gravel lane that served Samantha’s property continued past her lower pasture before joining two neighboring farms. Everybody used it. Feed trucks used it. Hay wagons used it. Repair crews used it.

Betty had used it for thirty years.
