When the Missing Field Feeder Turned a Boundary Dispute Into a Reckoning Across Miller County

Chapter 1: The Empty Hook Beside the Frosted Field

The chain had not broken.

Samuel Miller knew that before he touched it.

The last three links hung from the black iron hook, bright where the metal had been severed. Below them, frost silvered the trampled grass between his cattle lot and the lower field. The feeder itself was gone.

Samuel stood with one gloved hand resting on the post and listened to the cattle shifting behind him. A red heifer pushed her nose between the rails, waiting for grain. Beyond the lot, the field rolled toward Barbara Wright’s property in pale strips of cut hay and frozen mud.

The evening before, Barbara had pointed at the feeder and said, “You need to take that thing down.”

Samuel had been carrying a mineral bucket. He had set it beside the fence before answering.

“It keeps the deer off this side.”

“It brings them onto mine.”
