The HOA Ordered His Work Truck Gone, So He Read the Rule They Never Expected Him to Understand

Chapter 1: The Notice Waiting Under His Windshield Wiper

Edward Campbell was standing beside Patrick Mitchell’s truck before Patrick had both feet out the front door.

The white work truck sat where it had sat most nights for nearly nine years, backed into the right side of the driveway with its nose facing the street. Ladders were strapped to the rack. A locked aluminum toolbox crossed the bed. Two five-gallon buckets and a folded extension cord waited behind the cab.

A sheet of paper trembled beneath the driver-side windshield wiper.

Patrick stopped halfway down the walk.

Edward wore a navy windbreaker over a button-down shirt, though the morning was already warm enough that Patrick had rolled his sleeves to his elbows. He stood with one hand in his pocket and the other resting near the paper as if he had placed a flag on conquered ground.

“Morning, Patrick.”

Patrick glanced at the notice. “What’s that?”

“You know what it is.”
