Eleven Days After His Father’s Funeral, They Ordered Him to Tear Up the Road His Family Built

Chapter 1: Eleven Days After the Funeral, Survey Flags Appeared

The first orange flag was six feet from Mark Hall’s front step.

He stopped with one boot on the porch and stared at it, then at the second flag farther down the gravel lane, then at the man kneeling beside it with a measuring wheel.

Beyond him stood Gregory White.

Gregory wore a white polo, pale trousers, and shoes that had somehow stayed clean despite the dust. His dark SUV sat half on the shoulder where Daniel Hall used to park the hay wagon during repairs.

Mark looked at the measuring wheel again.

“What are you doing?”

The contractor straightened but did not answer.

Gregory did.
