She Chained His Farm Gate Over a Nine-Hundred-Dollar Assessment, So He Followed the Money Instead

Chapter 1: The Orange Chain Across Raymond’s Gate

Raymond Hall saw the orange chain before he saw Nancy Roberts.

It ran through the bars of his cattle gate in two bright loops, too clean and too new against the weathered gray steel. A heavy orange-coated padlock hung at the center. Twenty yards behind Raymond, his tractor idled with a flat hay wagon loaded high enough that he could see the top bales in the side mirror.

On the other side of the gate, Nancy stood beside her pickup with a folder tucked under one arm.

Raymond killed the tractor engine.

The sudden quiet made the chain seem louder than it was.

He climbed down, crossed the gravel, and stopped three feet from the gate.

“What is this?”

Nancy adjusted her glasses. “You received the notice.”
