They Ordered Laura to Remove Her Farm Gate—Then She Checked the 1994 Easement Beneath Their Road

Chapter 1: The Morning They Came for Laura’s Gate

The road grader was already running when Laura Campbell reached the end of her driveway.

Its diesel engine shook the cool morning air, low and steady, while the operator sat behind the glass with both hands off the controls. He was waiting.

So was Robert Davis.

He stood outside his pickup on the far side of Laura’s chained cattle gate, one boot on the gravel shoulder and a yellow sheet of paper folded against his thigh.

Laura stopped twenty feet short of him.

Beyond the gate, the gravel lane cut between two fenced pastures before bending through the trees toward the properties behind hers. A pair of yearling calves had wandered closer to the fence, ears forward, disturbed by the engine.

“What’s the grader doing here?”

Robert unfolded the paper.
