They Fined His Farm for Blocking a Shared Gravel Lane—Then He Compared Eighteen Months of Records

Chapter 1: The Orange Tag on His Own Farm Truck

The orange tag was clipped beneath Stephen Walker’s windshield wiper while three unticketed trailers sat farther up the same gravel lane.

He stopped beside his truck with one hand still wrapped around the handle of a five-gallon water jug.

For a moment, he thought the bright square of paper was an auction notice. Edward Campbell had been hosting an equipment sale on the adjoining farm since eight that morning, and handwritten directions, bidder numbers, and temporary signs had appeared everywhere along the shared lane.

Then Stephen saw the words at the top.

LANE OBSTRUCTION.

Below that was his parcel number.

He set the jug down.

His old farm truck stood with its passenger-side tires just beyond the grass edge, leaving enough room for a loaded hay wagon to pass. Stephen knew because one had passed twenty minutes earlier.
