They Tore Down Robert’s Farm Wall Before Hay Season—Then the Hill Started Moving

Chapter 1: The Excavator Reached the Wall Before Sunrise

The excavator bucket touched the top block of Robert Martin’s retaining wall before the sun cleared the ridge.

It did not strike. Not yet.

The steel teeth rested against the gray concrete like a hand placed on somebody’s shoulder before a fight.

Robert stood twenty feet away in the gravel lane with his phone in one hand and his weatherproof field notebook in the other. Beyond the wall, his upper hay field rose in a long green slope still wet with dew. Below it, Gregory Wilson’s equipment yard sat in shadow, crowded with a baler, two wagons, and the new high-sided hay trailer that had caused most of this.

Gregory raised one arm toward the excavator operator.

“Hold up.”

The engine stayed running.

Gregory walked toward Robert, boots grinding into the lane. He carried a folded sheet of paper under one arm.
