The HOA Locked Matthew Out of His Family Farm—Then Learned Their Only Entrance Crossed His Land

Chapter 1: The Morning Matthew Found His Road Locked

Matthew Hall saw the black iron bars before he saw the keypad.

For ten years, the road had been nothing more than pavement running between trimmed subdivision lawns and the county highway beyond. He had driven it before sunrise with feed sacks in the truck bed, after dark with mud dried hard around the wheel wells, and once with his father sitting beside him, already too sick to work but still pointing out where the old fence line had been.

On Monday morning, the road ended in a gate.

Matthew slowed his pickup until the tires whispered over the asphalt. Two black leaves of wrought iron met in the center beneath a stone entrance sign. A keypad stood on a steel pedestal beside the driver’s window.

He stared at it.

He had seen the construction crew the previous week. He had also seen three HOA notices in his mailbox over the past two months and left all three unopened on the kitchen counter.

The subdivision had never owned his route through it.

Whatever they were building, he had assumed, could not change that.
