The Farm Association Ignored the Mosquito Ditch for Weeks—Then Inspection Day Arrived at the Worst Possible Time

Chapter 1: The Ditch Behind the East Pasture Would Not Drain

The mosquito landed on Daniel Harris’s forearm while he was still reading the violation notice.

He slapped it hard enough to leave a gray smear against his skin, then looked from the paper in his hand to the green-brown water lying twenty yards beyond his fence.

The notice concerned his gate.

More precisely, it concerned the grass growing around the right-hand post of his gate, where a strip roughly two feet wide had gone to seed after his mower belt broke.

Daniel read the sentence again.

“Roadside appearance standards.”

He looked back at the ditch.

The drainage swale ran along the association strip between his east pasture and the gravel access road. It was supposed to collect stormwater from three adjoining farms, carry it through a shallow culvert, then empty toward the creek bottom. Most years, Daniel hardly noticed it.
