He Let His Neighbor Use Six Feet of His Yard for Years—Then the HOA Tried to Make It Permanent

Chapter 1: The Concrete Was Already Too Far Over

The jackhammer hit the driveway hard enough to rattle the glass in David Miller’s front window.

Across the narrow strip of lawn, a worker leaned his weight into the machine while another man stood beside a compact excavator. A white chalk line ran through Gregory Nelson’s driveway from the sidewalk toward the side yard. On one side of it, the concrete remained smooth and gray. On the other, it had already been broken into slabs.

Gregory sat on his porch with both hands resting on his knees.

He wasn’t watching the workers.

He was watching David’s house.

David stepped away from the window.

Six years earlier, there had been no chalk line.

There had only been concrete meeting grass.
