They Fined Him for Leaving Hay Bales Beside the Farm Lane—Then He Checked Where the Maintenance Money Went

Chapter 1: The Hay Bales Had Not Moved in Four Years

Catherine Hall took the photograph before Gary Williams had even climbed down from the tractor.

He saw her through the dusty rear glass of the cab, standing at the bend in the gravel lane with one hand on her hip and her phone raised toward the two wrapped hay bales he had just set beside the drainage strip. The tractor was still idling. One bale had a faint smear of mud across its white plastic, and the other sat exactly where Gary had placed the same kind of bale every September for years.

He killed the engine.

Catherine lowered the phone.

“You planning to leave those there?”

Gary opened the cab door and stepped down carefully. His knees reminded him he was sixty-two before his mind did.

“Until I feed them or move them to the lower shed.”

“That’s not a storage area.”
