He Reported the Old Farm Utility Pole—Then the County Marked His New Concrete Yard for Removal

Chapter 1: The Complaint Arrived Before the Hay Truck Did

The county notice was already stapled to the old utility pole when Dennis Walker came down the lane at six-thirty Monday morning.

He saw the white sheet before he saw the county seal.

It fluttered against the gray wood in the wake of his pickup, bright and wrong against a pole that had stood beside that gravel entrance longer than several of the nearby machine sheds. Someone had driven two fresh staples through the top corners. Below them, the paper carried enough bold print to be read from the road.

Dennis stopped with the truck half across the entrance.

Behind him, somewhere beyond the curve, an air horn sounded once.

The hay delivery.

“Of course,” Dennis muttered.

He stepped out, leaving the engine running, and walked to the pole. At sixty-seven, he no longer moved quickly just because somebody else wanted him to. His boots ground pale limestone into the damp edge of the lane.
