William Walker woke to the sound of a concrete truck backing up.

The warning beeps came through the bedroom wall in slow, mechanical bursts.

He sat upright before he was fully awake.

No one poured concrete on a cattle farm before sunrise unless they were trying to finish something before somebody objected.

William pulled on his jeans, shoved his feet into work boots, and stepped outside without bothering with coffee.
