What the Silence Kept

Part I — The Missing Sentence

David Carter heard the voice three times before he let anyone breathe.

The room was dark except for the blue line of the audio file crawling across the screen. Six officers sat around the table, still as furniture, watching the waveform break into static.

A man’s voice came through the speakers, strained and close.

“This isn’t what we were told—”

Then nothing.

No gunfire. No scream. No final order.

Just a cut so clean it felt deliberate.

David lifted one hand.
