Chapter 1: The Tape Stretched Across Frank’s Gate The feed truck stopped thirty feet short of Frank Hill’s gate because Robert Clark had stretched a steel measuring tape across the entrance. Its diesel engine settled into a heavy idle on the gravel lane. Dust drifted past the windshield and hung over the ditch. The driver…
Chapter 1: The Notice Hanging Beside the Flashing Gate Jessica Carter was fastening a yellow notice to Rachel Harris’s gate when the feed truck came around the bend. Rachel saw the truck first as a white rectangle beyond Jessica’s shoulder, slowing on the narrow gravel lane. Then the amber beacon above the gate flashed twice,…
Chapter 1: The Man Measuring the Mailbox Before Sunrise The headlights stopped at Charles Nelson’s mailbox before he had finished feeding the second row of calves. He saw them from the barn aisle, two pale beams washing across the wet gravel at the farm entrance. For a moment he thought a delivery driver had arrived…

Chapter 1: The Fines Arrived Before the Funeral Flowers Wilted Pamela Davis had parked her pickup sideways across the Carter farm gate. Amy saw it before she saw Pamela herself: the silver truck angled over the gravel entrance as if somebody had decided the farm needed permission to breathe. Beyond it, twelve folding chairs were…
Chapter 1: The Morning Margaret Found Her Farm Road Chained The chain across the farm road was new. Daniel Wright knew that before he even shut off his county truck.
