They Fined Her for Using the Farm Road Too Often, So She Built Another Way In

Chapter 1: The Morning Her Farm Access Became Excessive

Cynthia Roberts stood in the middle of the cooperative lane with one hand raised while Janet Green’s livestock trailer idled twenty yards away.

Janet hit the brake.

Six steers shifted behind her, hooves knocking against the trailer floor. The sun had barely cleared the tree line, but heat was already collecting under the aluminum roof.

Janet lowered the window.

“You need to move.”

Cynthia did not.

She wore work slacks, boots too clean for the gravel, and a yellow safety vest over a pale shirt. Under one arm she carried the cooperative’s weathered access ledger. In her other hand was a single sheet of paper.

“You have an assessment due.”
