Chapter 1: The Yellow Notice on the Green Truck The yellow sheet was tucked beneath the windshield wiper of Daniel Baker’s green truck so neatly that, for half a second, he thought it was an advertisement. Then he saw the words at the top. VIOLATION NOTICE. Daniel stopped in the gravel with a socket wrench…
Chapter 1: The Morning They Came for Laura’s Gate The road grader was already running when Laura Campbell reached the end of her driveway. Its diesel engine shook the cool morning air, low and steady, while the operator sat behind the glass with both hands off the controls. He was waiting. So was Robert Davis….
Chapter 1: The Green Shed Beyond the Old Fence Frank Campbell stopped the tractor so hard that the hay rake behind him snapped against its hitch. There was a building in his pasture. Not near the pasture. Not beside it. In it. A dark-green steel equipment shed stood beyond the weathered livestock fence that separated…

He saw it when he stepped down from his pickup, coffee still warm in the steel cup between the seats. The paper was too bright against the gray cedar post, just below…
Chapter 1: The Orange Cable Across Her Pasture The orange cable was already plugged into Margaret Hill’s outlet when she stepped out of the mudroom with her first cup of coffee. She stopped with one boot on the concrete and one on the gravel. The cord was thick enough for shop equipment, bright enough to…
Chapter 1: The Concrete Was Already Against Her Fence The concrete had not been there the night before. Margaret Lewis stopped halfway down the orchard row with one pruning glove still tucked into her back pocket and stared through the cedar fence. On the resort side, a pale gray footing ran beside the fence where…
