Chapter 1: The Minivans Arrived Before the Feed Truck The silver minivan rolled across Larry Miller’s farm entrance just as the front tires of his tractor reached the gate. Larry hit the clutch. The tractor stopped hard enough to make the stacked hay on the wagon behind him shift against its straps. Dust pushed forward…
Chapter 1: The Water Was Not There Yesterday Michelle Carter stopped the utility cart so abruptly that the feed bucket tipped against the passenger-side floorboard. Water was moving across the lower hay field. Not rainwater settling in a low place. Not the thin silver ribbon that sometimes remained after a hard spring storm. This was…
Chapter 1: The Gate Tag on Daniel’s Own Road The chain had not been there when Daniel Clark left before sunrise. Now it stretched across the gravel lane at hood height, bright galvanized links pulled tight between the old pipe gate and a cedar post Daniel had set with his father thirty-six years earlier. From Raymond’s porch, it looked…
Chapter 1: The Strangers Who Knew His Gate Code The third trailer was already through the gate when Anthony Martin saw it. He was halfway across the lower pasture in his feed truck, headlights cutting through the last gray before sunrise, when a red pickup rolled beyond the weathered iron gate and turned onto the…
Chapter 1: The Orange Tag on His Own Farm Truck The orange tag was clipped beneath Stephen Walker’s windshield wiper while three unticketed trailers sat farther up the same gravel lane. He stopped beside his truck with one hand still wrapped around the handle of a five-gallon water jug. For a moment, he thought the…

The steel teeth rested against the gray concrete like a hand placed on somebody’s shoulder before a fight. Robert stood twenty feet…
