He Threw Jack’s Bridge Papers Into the Mud, Then Learned His Farm Road Crossed Jack’s Land

Chapter 1: The Folder Brandon Threw Into the Mud

The folder hit the edge of the porch, opened in midair, and scattered twenty pages into the mud.

Jack Miller watched an engineer’s photograph land faceup in a wheel rut. Brown water spread across the image of the rotten bridge beam until the crack disappeared beneath the stain.

Brandon Davis looked down from the porch.

“There,” he said. “Now you can take your bridge problem home with you.”

Jack did not bend immediately.

Behind them, the timber bridge crossed the creek at a shallow angle between cottonwoods and fence posts. It had carried pickups, hay wagons, feed trucks, and farm equipment for decades. From a distance it still looked solid enough. Up close, one of the main support beams had softened dark around the bolts, and the bottom edge had begun to crumble.

Jack had noticed the sag two weeks earlier.

He had called a structural engineer instead of guessing.
