The Locked Red Door at the Edge of Michael Green’s Farm Hid More Than Flowers

Chapter 1: The Red Door Beyond the Last Apple Row

Susan Mitchell was already standing at the red door when Michael reached the last row of apple trees.

She had crossed the drainage ditch and come through the gap where the old wire fence sagged, though she knew he did not allow anyone beyond the packing shed without asking. One hand rested on her hip. The other pointed toward the damp soil beneath the stone wall.

The door stood between two rough limestone pillars, its paint faded from barn red to the color of dried blood. A black padlock hung from the iron latch.

Michael stopped ten feet away.

“You’re on my land.”

Susan glanced at him, then back at the base of the wall. “And your water may be on mine.”

He carried a pruning saw in one hand and a canvas picking bag over his shoulder. Neither object felt useful now.

“That ground’s always damp in September.”
