They Called His Farm Workshop an Eyesore Until He Finally Opened the Locked Door

Chapter 1: The Hazard Notice on the Locked Door

Karen Brown drove the first staple through the orange notice before Edward reached the workshop.

The hammer strike cracked across the farmyard. A second blow pinned the paper flat against a door that had survived six decades of rain, machinery vibration, and men leaning their whole weight against it on winter mornings.

Edward stopped beside the fuel tank, one gloved hand still wrapped around a grease gun.

“What are you doing?”

Karen stepped back to inspect her work. She wore clean riding boots despite having no horses yet, and her blond hair was pulled tight beneath a navy cap embroidered with the name of the boarding business she intended to open next spring.

“Making sure you see it this time.”

The notice was bright enough to be read from the county road. UNSAFE STRUCTURE appeared across the top in black block letters. Below it were smaller paragraphs, a case number, and the county land-use office seal.

Edward set the grease gun on the tank.
