They Came to Remove the Stone, but the Farm Boundaries Began Moving With It

Chapter 1: The Excavator Arrived Before the Surveyor

The excavator bucket dropped until its steel teeth hovered inches above the moss on the old stone.

James Harris drove his tractor sideways across the gravel lane and killed the engine.

The sudden silence seemed larger than the machine. Dust drifted past the tractor’s hood. Beyond the lane, cattle raised their heads from the dry September pasture. Five road association members stood near the fence, watching as though James had arrived late to his own eviction.

Deborah Allen stepped away from the excavator. She wore work boots too clean for the lane and held a yellow folder against her side.

“You can’t block common access,” she said.

James removed the tractor key and closed his fist around it. “Then don’t change the common corner before the surveyor gets here.”

“The surveyor was supposed to come yesterday.”

“She rescheduled for ten.”
