The Farmer Who Refused to Turn Off the Light Beyond the Flooded Field

Chapter 1: The Light That Crossed the Property Line

Melissa Brown came through the lower gate carrying wire cutters.

Thomas Carter saw their red handles flash beneath the field lamp before he recognized her face. The light mounted on the weathered pole threw a hard white circle over the pasture, the drainage ditch, and the first two rows of Melissa’s orchard. Beyond that circle, the land disappeared into blackness.

Thomas left the feed bucket beside the trough and walked toward her.

“Put those away.”

Melissa stopped at the pole. Her rubber boots were dark with mud, and the shoulders of her canvas coat shone with mist. She tilted her head toward her house on the rise beyond the orchard.

“That light has been in my bedroom every night for three weeks.”

“It’s been there longer than three weeks.”

“That doesn’t make it legal.”
