The Vintage Green Muscle Car And The Suburban HOA Deed

CHAPTER 4: THE STATE FORENSIC SEAL

A dead silence descended over the driveway. The only sound was the distant caw of a crow perched atop the loblolly pines and the faint, rhythmic static of Deputy Jenkins’s shoulder radio.

Brenda stared at Marcus, her manicured fingers clenching into tight balls. “Who… who did you just call?”

Tyler took an aggressive step toward Marcus, his face darkening with rage as he realized he had been played. “You think you’re playing games with us, old man? Give me that damn phone!”

Tyler lunged forward, reaching out with both hands to snatch Marcus’s smartphone.

In a blur of effortless, controlled movement, Marcus side-stepped the clumsy rush, caught Tyler’s extended wrist with his left hand, and twisted it downward with precise leverage. Tyler gasped in shock as his momentum carried him forward, his heavy shoulder pinned firmly against the concrete driveway pillar, his arm locked in a secure, non-injurious control hold that completely neutralized his bulk.

“Assault! He’s assaulting my son!” Brenda shrieked hysterically, clutching her face. “Deputy! Shoot him! Arrest him!”

“Nobody is shooting anyone, Mrs. Vance!” Deputy Jenkins bellowed, stepping between them with a thunderous voice of command. “Tyler, stand down right now! Don’t move a muscle, or you will be in custody for felony battery on an officer!”

Marcus released Tyler’s wrist with effortless disdain, taking a step back and smoothing the collar of his navy shirt. Tyler stumbled against the wall, clutching his forearm, his breath coming in ragged, humiliated gasps as the fight drained out of him.

From his back pocket, Marcus produced a slim leather credential wallet and flipped it open with a sharp flick of his wrist.

Pinned inside was the burnished gold shield of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, paired with laminated credentials bearing Marcus’s photo, state security watermark, and the official title: Chief Forensic Reconstruction Specialist – State Highway Patrol & Special Financial Crimes Joint Task Force.

Deputy Jenkins looked at the gold shield, then snapped his heels together in an instinctive posture of professional deference. “Inspector Bennett… sir. I had no idea you were running this operation out of forty-two.”

“Wait… what is that?” Brenda stammered, her voice cracking as the color drained from her cheeks until she looked like wet paper. “A state inspector? You… you’re just an auto mechanic!”

“I am an automotive forensic investigator, Mrs. Vance,” Marcus said, his voice icy and razor-sharp. “And for the past six months, the State Attorney General’s Economic Protection Division has been monitoring complaints from eight elderly residents in Pinecrest Meadows regarding predatory towing, forged assessment liens, and fraudulent municipal drop fees.”

Down the quiet residential street, the low rumble of multiple high-powered V8 engines shook the air. Three unmarked black Chevrolet Suburbans turned into the cul-de-sac, their discreet red and blue grille strobes flashing silently against the brick facades. Behind them followed a marked Wake County Sheriff transport van.

The vehicles rolled to a halt, boxing in Tyler’s flatbed tow truck from the front and rear, completely sealing the driveway.

Tyler panicked. He lunged toward the driver’s door of his flatbed, desperately fumbling for his keys. “Mom, we gotta go! Move!”

Before Tyler could reach the door handle, two uniformed state investigators in navy tactical vests stepped out of the lead Suburban, blocking his path with stern authority.

“Tyler Vance! Step away from the commercial vehicle and place your hands on the hood!” an investigator commanded firmly.

Tyler froze, his face twitching with terrified disbelief as the investigator unclipped a set of steel handcuffs, clicking the ratchets securely around his wrists.

“Mom! Do something! Tell them who we are!” Tyler cried out, his voice cracking into high-pitched panic.

Brenda stood paralyzed on the driveway, her pink pantsuit suddenly looking absurd amidst the sea of dark tactical vests.

A tall woman with sharp silver hair wearing a dark grey suit stepped out of the second Suburban, holding an official blue-bound court folder stamped with the gold seal of the Wake County Superior Court.

“Brenda Vance,” the lead investigator, Special Agent Miller, announced with chilling clarity. “I have a signed search and seizure warrant for your residence, the Pinecrest Meadows clubhouse office, and all financial servers associated with Apex Recovery LLC. You have sixty seconds to unlock the association records, or our entry team will breach the clubhouse doors.”
