They Brought an Excavator to His Ohio Farm, but the Old Mound Was Never Just a Hill

Chapter 1: The Excavator Was Already Turning Into His Lane

Andrew Nelson heard the diesel before he saw the machine.

He was still carrying a half-empty feed bucket toward the cattle lot when a long flatbed trailer nosed off the township road and began turning into his gravel lane. An excavator sat chained to the deck, its boom folded low, the steel bucket hanging over the rear tires like a clenched hand.

Andrew stopped beside the gate.

The driver eased forward until the trailer cleared the ditch. Behind it came Nancy Baker’s white pickup, followed by Benjamin Scott in his older gray truck.

Andrew set the bucket down.

Nancy parked first.

“You’re early,” he said.

“We’re staging equipment today.”
