They Ordered Him to Remove One Farm Antenna, Then Learned Their Whole Valley Ran Through His Land

Chapter 1: The Orange Flags Appeared Before Breakfast

The excavator stopped with its steel tracks less than three feet from George Carter’s cattle gate.

George had been carrying a bucket of mineral supplement toward the lower pasture when he heard the diesel engine climbing the gravel road. By the time he reached the entrance, six bright orange flags had appeared along the shoulder, a fresh line of color cutting across the gray lane toward his equipment shed.

Pamela Green stood beside the machine with a clipboard tucked under one arm.

“Morning, George.”

He set the bucket down.

“Who put those flags there?”

“The association’s contractor.”

“That wasn’t what I asked.”
