They Fined His Twelve-Inch Farm Sign, So He Used the County Rules They Had Never Read

Chapter 1: The Sign Patrick Pulled Before Breakfast

Patrick Williams was already holding Benjamin Carter’s sign when Benjamin reached the gate.

The little board looked ridiculous in Patrick’s hands. Twelve inches high, maybe eighteen across, hand-painted white with dark blue letters by the livestock club kids the previous Saturday. It had been planted in the grass beside Benjamin’s pasture fence, far enough from the gravel lane that a truck could turn without coming near it.

Patrick had pulled both stakes clean from the ground.

Three much larger signs stood twenty yards behind him at the shared-road entrance. One announced the annual farm-tour weekend. Another advertised the road association’s barbecue fundraiser. The third pointed visitors toward parking.

Benjamin stopped beside the cattle gate.

“You mind telling me what you’re doing?”

Patrick turned. He wore work jeans and a clean polo, as if he had dressed specifically to perform association business before breakfast.

“Enforcing the sign policy.”
