When the Creek Went Dry, the Rancher Across the Fence Knew Exactly Which Rule They Had Broken

Chapter 1: The Morning the Old Trough Stopped Filling

The cattle were already crowded around the galvanized trough when Sandra Nelson realized something was wrong.

Not empty. Not yet.

But the water sat six inches below the pale mineral line that had ringed the steel for years.

One cow pushed her muzzle against the float valve. Another shouldered in beside her. The valve gave a weak metallic click and released a thread of water no thicker than a pencil.

Sandra stood with one hand on the gate.

Across the fence, beyond a strip of sage and cottonwood, three sprinklers swept bright arcs over the seventh fairway of the private golf club.

Tick.

Hiss.
