The Farm Association Fined Him Over One Gate, Then Its Own Records Exposed Thirty-Seven Unauthorized Notices

Chapter 1: The Orange Envelope Hanging From the Farm Gate

The feed truck stopped twenty yards short of Mark Anderson’s gate because Deborah Martin was standing in the middle of the gravel lane with an orange envelope raised in one hand.

The driver leaned out his window.

“Want me to back out?”

“No.” Mark wiped his palms on his work pants and walked toward the entrance. “Give me a minute.”

The truck idled behind Deborah, diesel pulsing against the quiet pasture. Beyond the gate, a dozen cattle had already gathered at the sound of the engine.

Deborah did not move.

She wore work boots, dark jeans, and a clean canvas jacket, and she held a clipboard against her hip. The orange envelope looked absurdly bright against it.

“You received notice last week,” she said.
