He Thought the Tire Tracks Were Careless Until the Same Farm Gate Opened Fourteen Times

Chapter 1: The Tracks That Crossed His Gate Again

Brian Harris saw the tire tracks before he saw the truck.

Two dark lines cut through the damp grass beside his lower gate, almost perfectly parallel, curving away from the gray gravel lane and disappearing toward the shallow rise beyond the pasture fence. The tracks were fresh enough that beads of water still clung to the crushed blades.

He stopped halfway through fastening the latch on his utility cart.

For a few seconds, he simply looked.

The galvanized chain hung across the livestock opening exactly where he had left it Friday evening. The small weatherproof sign wired to the cedar post faced the lane. It was plain enough that no one could mistake the message. Private farm access. Please stay on road.

Yet someone had crossed anyway.

Brian stepped over the ditch and followed the tracks.

Near the second fence post, the ground had been gouged deeply enough to expose brown soil beneath the grass. A plastic irrigation riser leaned at an angle. He bent, touched it, and felt the looseness in the fitting.
