He Measured Fourteen Inches of Stolen Ground—and Uncovered the HOA’s Quietest Betrayal

Chapter 1: Fourteen Inches Beneath a Fishing Boat

The boat was outside Michael Lewis’s kitchen window.

Not beyond the fence. Not passing on the road. Its white hull filled the narrow view above the sink, close enough that he could see dried lake mud along the lower seam and a green registration sticker peeling at one corner.

Michael stood with the coffee pot tilted over his mug until hot coffee spilled across the counter.

He set the pot down and went outside.

The side yard had been a twelve-foot strip of pale gravel the night before. Now two deep trailer ruts ran through it. One wheel had crushed the timber edging around the planting bed. The rear corner of the trailer had struck a cedar fence post and split it near the ground, leaving the post leaning toward Michael’s house.

The boat sat diagonally between the homes, its bow near Patrick Hall’s garage and its stern over Michael’s gravel. A faded blue cover had been tied over the cockpit. The engine hung above a patch of displaced stone.

Patrick was tightening a chain around the trailer tongue.

“You hit my fence,” Michael said.
