The Morning She Crushed His Fox Planter, the Whole Neighborhood Learned Who the Rules Protected

Chapter 1: The Orange Notice Beside the Broken Fox

Katherine Hall’s shoe came down on the ceramic fox before Kevin Davis reached the front door.

The planter broke with a dry crack that carried through the entryway. One painted ear skipped across the welcome mat. Dark potting soil spilled over the brick porch, followed by the small rosemary plant Kevin had trimmed the night before.

Katherine steadied herself against the porch column and looked down as if something inconvenient had happened beneath her.

An orange sheet of paper remained propped against the largest broken piece.

Kevin opened the door.

For a moment, neither of them spoke. Katherine wore a pale cardigan buttoned to the throat despite the early Texas heat. A narrow clipboard rested against her hip. Her gray hair was arranged neatly, and the small pearl studs in her ears caught the porch light.

Kevin looked from her shoe to the fox’s broken face.

“You stepped on it.”
