He Reported the Old Utility Pole—Then the Easement Led Straight Under His New Patio

Chapter 1: The Complaint That Brought County Trucks to Joshua’s Curb

The first county truck stopped with its front bumper almost even with Joshua Martin’s mailbox.

The second rolled past it and braked beside the old utility pole.

Joshua stood at the edge of his porch with a coffee mug warming both hands. Across the property line, Brian Clark had already come outside. He wore a pressed polo and clean sneakers despite the damp grass, and his arms were folded in the satisfied way of a man watching a scheduled delivery arrive on time.

Two county workers climbed out. One opened a side compartment and pulled out a clipboard. The other looked up at the weathered pole, then down at the grass around its base.

Brian glanced toward Joshua.

“Well,” he said, “at least now we’ll get an answer.”

Joshua took a sip.

They had already had answers. Brian simply had not liked any of Joshua’s.
