My Neighbor Cut Through My Fence for a Lake View, So I Made Him Respect the Property Line

Chapter 1: The Rectangle Cut Straight Through My Fence

I knew something was wrong before I reached the back steps.

There was blue water where cedar should have been.

For three years, the fence along the east side of my backyard had been six feet of uninterrupted reddish-brown boards. I had paid for the survey, the permit, the posts, the concrete, and the contractor who installed it two inches inside my property line so nobody could ever argue about whose fence it was.

Now, halfway down the run, a clean rectangle had been cut through it.

Not cracked.

Not broken by a fallen branch.

Cut.

The opening was about three feet wide and two feet high, positioned almost perfectly at eye level for someone sitting on the patio next door. Through it, I could see a strip of afternoon lake shining between two maples.
