The Birdhouse They Knocked Down Became the One Thing Their Neighborhood Could Not Ignore

Chapter 1: The Tower Above the Cedar Fence

Jennifer Wright’s shadow crossed Frank Allen’s workbench before her voice reached him.

“That has to come down.”

Frank kept one hand on the roof section balanced against his shoulder. The piece was nearly four feet wide, built from narrow cedar shingles he had cut and sanded himself. Above him, the unfinished birdhouse rose past the top of the fence, its stacked chambers casting long angular shadows across the lawn.

He looked at Jennifer, then at the ladder.

“I’m not finished.”

“That’s the problem.”

She stood on the other side of the open gate with her arms folded, her pale blouse too clean for a yard full of sawdust. A leather folder was tucked beneath one elbow. Frank recognized it. Architectural committee paperwork.

He turned back to the ladder.
