The HOA Board Member Took Over His Empty Garage Until One Locked Door Exposed Them Both

Chapter 1: The Car That Appeared Behind His Open Garage Door

The white sedan was already inside Paul Miller’s garage when he lifted the kitchen blind.

For several seconds, he stood with one hand against the window frame, waiting for the image to arrange itself into something reasonable. The detached garage sat at the end of his driveway, twenty yards from the house. Its door was open. A thick black charging cable crossed the concrete floor from the wall outlet to the rear quarter panel of the sedan.

Beside the car, someone had unfolded a lavender lawn chair.

Paul set down his coffee.

He had left the side gate latched the night before. The garage door had been down. He was certain of both because he checked them each evening, the way he checked the stove and the back lock. Since retiring from the municipal records office, routines had become the quiet beams holding his days upright.

He walked outside in slippers and a buttoned flannel shirt.

Margaret Clark emerged from behind the car carrying a stainless-steel tumbler. Her gray-blond hair was clipped back, and oversized sunglasses covered half her face.

“Morning,” she said.
