The HOA Called Her an Obstruction Until Her Six-Foot Boundary File Stopped Their Entire Project

Chapter 1: The Gravel Stopped Three Feet From Her Door

The excavator bucket swung over Carol Davis’s lawn before she had finished pouring her coffee.

She saw it through the front window, a yellow steel jaw hanging above the narrow strip of grass beside her driveway. For half a second it hovered there, dripping damp soil. Then the operator rotated the machine and dumped the load onto a growing ridge of gravel that had not been there Friday.

Carol set the mug down.

By the time she reached the side door, the bucket was coming back.

“Hold it.”

The operator did not hear her over the engine.

Carol stepped onto the driveway and raised one arm. The machine slowed only when a construction worker nearer the curb noticed her and waved toward the cab.

The bucket stopped.
