The HOA Fined His Twelve-Inch School Sign, So He Made Their Double Standard Impossible to Ignore

Chapter 1: The Yellow Envelope Beside Three Larger Signs

Michael Thompson had already pulled the sign halfway out of Ryan Mitchell’s lawn when Ryan opened his front door.

The metal stakes dragged through damp soil with a soft tearing sound. Michael gave the sign one final tug, shook dirt from its narrow legs, and held it away from his navy polo as though it had contaminated the grass.

It was barely twelve inches wide.

VOTE YES FOR WESTFIELD SCHOOLS, it said in blue letters beneath a child’s drawing of an open book.

Ryan remained on the porch, one hand still on the doorknob.

“Morning,” Michael said.

Beyond him, at the stone entrance to Cedar Ridge, three glossy signs stood in a row. Each was nearly four feet wide, printed in gold and navy, advertising the association’s annual gala. They had been there since the beginning of the month.

Ryan looked from those signs to the one in Michael’s hand.
