The HOA Marked My Father’s Driveway as Common Property—Then One Buried Survey Pin Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Line They Painted Across Dad’s Driveway

The orange line began at the curb, crossed the edge of the concrete driveway, and disappeared beneath the gate my father had opened every morning for twenty-three years.

I stood in the garage with his coffee mug still on the workbench behind me and watched a landscaping contractor drive a wooden stake into the flower bed.

“Excuse me,” I called.

The man stopped hammering. A second worker looked toward the white SUV parked at the curb.

Stephanie Martin stepped out holding a clipboard.

I had known Stephanie for years in the shallow way people know an HOA president: holiday emails, annual meetings, reminders about trash cans. That morning, she walked toward me with the careful expression people use when they have rehearsed bad news.

“Samantha, we sent notice Friday.”

“I was at the funeral home Friday morning.”
