The HOA President Brought a Fake Court Order, but the House Remembered Every Lie

Chapter 1: The Notice on the Blue Door

The pounding began hard enough to shake the framed family photograph beside the entryway.

Michael Hall was halfway down the stairs when Barbara Miller struck the blue front door again, three clipped blows with the side of her fist. Through the narrow window, he saw her purple blazer, a clear document sleeve tucked beneath one arm, and two members of the homeowners association standing behind her on the walkway.

Across the street, a man had stopped washing his truck.

Melissa Clark stood at the edge of her yard with a bag of groceries hanging from one hand.

Barbara knocked a third time.

“Michael Hall,” she called. “Open this door.”

Sandra appeared behind him, still holding the dish towel she had been using in the kitchen.

“What does she want?”
