The HOA Sold Forty-Seven Strangers Access to His Dock—Then the Real Boundary Came to Light

Chapter 1: The Stranger Who Had Already Paid for Michael’s Dock

The stranger was halfway down Michael Lewis’s dock before Michael saw the paper in his hand.

“Afternoon,” the man called, stepping around a coil of rope as though he had been there before. “You know if the power pedestal’s working on Slip B?”

Michael lowered the cordless drill he had been using to tighten a loose deck board.

“There isn’t a Slip B.”

The stranger stopped. He was in his late thirties, sunburned across the nose, with a plastic marina wristband around one arm. Beyond the dock, a white fishing boat rocked beside a public launch trailer. A woman and two children waited near it, surrounded by coolers and folded life jackets.

The man lifted the sheet.

“That’s what I reserved.”

Michael looked past him toward the black iron gate at the top of the shoreline path. It stood open because he had been carrying lumber from the garage. A small brass plaque beside it read LEWIS PROPERTY. The plaque was old enough that the grooves had gone dark.
