The HOA Told Him His Sign Was Illegal, Then He Found Who Really Owned the Entrance

Chapter 1: The Sign Karen Took Down Before Breakfast

Richard Anderson was halfway through pouring coffee when he saw Karen Hill walking past his kitchen window with Margaret Lewis’s handmade sign tucked beneath one arm.

He set the pot down without filling his cup.

The sign was easy to recognize. Margaret had painted it two days earlier on a square of white plywood: SLOW DOWN—GRANDKIDS PLAYING. She had planted it beside her driveway after a delivery van came around the curve fast enough to send her youngest grandson scrambling onto the lawn.

Now Karen was carrying it toward her SUV as if she had collected trash from the roadside.

Richard stepped onto his porch.

“Morning, Karen.”

She stopped but did not look embarrassed.

“This was installed without approval.”
