The HOA Towed His Medical Van Over Six Inches—Then One Missing Approval Changed Everything

Chapter 1: Six Inches Beyond the Driveway Edge

Michael Jackson stepped outside with his van key already between his fingers and stopped so abruptly that the screen door struck his shoulder.

The driveway was empty.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the pale rectangle of concrete where the van had been parked the night before. His first thought was theft. His second was that he had somehow forgotten lending it to someone, which was ridiculous because almost no one else could drive it comfortably with the hand controls installed beneath the steering wheel.

Then he saw the dark crescent where the rear tire had rested near the driveway edge.

Michael tightened his hand around the key.

The van was not ordinary transportation. He had spent months pretending it was.

After retiring from the Army, he had been the man neighbors called when lawn mowers would not start or garage doors rattled. Cancer had changed the arithmetic of simple things. He could still walk, but treatment left his legs unreliable on bad days, and the van carried the equipment that made longer trips manageable without turning every errand into an argument with his own body.

Tomorrow morning, he had an oncology scan.
