The Hungry Veteran Offered His POW Medal Before the Cameras Stopped Rolling

Chapter 1: The Velvet Box Beneath His Coat

The eviction notice slid beneath the apartment door while Anna was packing her lunch.

Its white edge crossed the worn linoleum like a blade.

Raymond Harris saw the red block letters before she did. He moved faster than his knees wanted, crossing the narrow living room with one hand against the wall. The envelope stopped beneath his shoe.

“Mail?” Anna called from the kitchen.

He bent carefully, fighting the black spots that gathered at the edges of his vision. The paper inside was heavier than an advertisement. He folded it once without reading it, though he already knew every line.

FINAL NOTICE.

BALANCE DUE WITHIN FORTY-EIGHT HOURS.
