They Ordered Him To Open The Lake Road Before Learning Why He Locked It

Chapter 1: The Loader Was Already At The Gate

The loader was already running beside Paul Carter’s gate when he stepped off the porch.

Its bucket hovered inches from the left post, teeth angled under the packed gravel where Paul had poured temporary footings three weeks earlier. Two orange cones lay on their sides near the steel plates, and one of Joseph Thompson’s crewmen had a wrench on the hinge bolt. The chain across the gate trembled every time the machine idled.

Paul did not shout.

He crossed the road in his work boots with his phone in one hand and the padlock key in the other, moving slowly enough that every man there had time to see him coming. Beyond the gate, the lake held the late-afternoon light like glass. Behind him, the cabin sat quiet among the pines.

Joseph looked up first. He was broad-shouldered, dusty, and uncomfortable in the way men got when they had already started a job and discovered the owner was home.

“Mr. Carter,” Joseph said over the engine. “You need to stand clear.”

Paul stopped in front of the loader bucket.

The operator eased his boot off the pedal. The engine kept growling.
