The Notice on Our Blue Door Looked Official Until My Wife Recognized the Signature

Chapter 1: The Paper Taped Across Our Blue Front Door

Catherine Hall was pressing a cream-colored sheet against our blue front door when I opened it.

For half a second, neither of us moved.

Her left hand held the paper flat beside the doorbell. Her right hand gripped a roll of clear packing tape. Behind her, at the edge of our front walk, the community manager stood with a tablet tucked against his chest.

“Mr. Mitchell,” Catherine said. “Good. You’re home.”

I looked at the heading before I looked at her.

IMMEDIATE POSSESSION AND ACCESS ORDER.

The words were centered in black capitals beneath something that resembled a county seal.

“What are you doing?”
