The Bollards Stayed Standing After the HOA President’s Perfect Family Began to Collapse

Chapter 1: The SUV Folded Around Three Steel Posts

Tyler Baker came out of the driver’s-side window on his hands.

For one confused second, Larry Mitchell thought the boy was crawling through smoke. Then he saw the white cloud hissing from beneath the folded hood and recognized steam from the ruptured radiator. The front of the black SUV had wrapped itself around three stainless-steel posts at the edge of Larry’s driveway. Plastic fragments glittered across the pavement. One headlight blinked weakly through the wreckage.

“Don’t stand up,” Larry called.

Tyler tried anyway. His knees folded beneath him.

Larry set his coffee mug on the porch rail and crossed the yard as quickly as his stiff hip allowed. Before he reached the driveway, Jonathan Baker came running from the house across the cul-de-sac.

“Tyler!”

Jonathan struck the curb badly, recovered, and dropped beside his son. He gripped Tyler by the face, then the shoulders, searching for blood.

“Look at me. Can you hear me? Where does it hurt?”
